Créer racine / Create root

Rupture with the native land,
this is not a requiem,
I come to preserve you.

Mark Daovannary's parents left Laos for France in the 1970s. This departure marked a break with their family tree. In Create Root, the artist uses a branch detached from its trunk. He protects the parts without bark with a natural resin secreted by cochineal insects from Southeast Asia. In this way, he metaphorically preserves a part of his family history.
